Typical garden soil is not used for live aquatic plants, as it will cloud your pond water. Additionally, any chemicals in the soil will then leach into your pond water, potentially harming other life there. Instead, use pots that are designed for ponds and water gardens that have “slotted” sides that allow for water to pass through. If water did not pass through, it could create an anaerobic (without oxygen) environment that can spur the growth of bad bacteria, which you definitely don’t want.
