In 2009 we have had more inquiries regarding alage than ever before. Even mature ponds have not escaped it. While algae is an extremely simple celled plant, removing or preventing it is a complex task. There is no one single solution to the problem.
Controlling string algae is difficult. We have found that GreenClean still produces the best results. It is however, not a miracle in a container but it does do the job. First, remove as much string algae as you can with a net or EZ Reach . Then, for best results turn off your pump for 10 minutes while you distribute the granuales (preferably directly on the remaining string algae) You can usually see a bubbling effect while it weakens and removes it. I personally use a pool brush to remove it from the rocks and sides at this point. Be sure to net out the dying algae so it does not end up at the bottom of the pond degrading into a new nutrient source. Be sure to turn your pump back on. If you follow this regime you can control the string algae until your pond re-balances and can take care of it on its own.
